How do I calculate approximate upload speed?

Calculating the upload of a secure online backup is different than just uploading files to the internet.

With compression and encryption, this adds more time to the backup.

Yes, this adds time and its necessary to secure the data before and during transit.

The pause during upload is normal. On large files we are performing a streaming backup that compresses and encrypts 10MB at a time and uploads. This is completely normal and is 40% faster than the previous version of our software.

Other factors that can make the online backup slower are:

Antivirus / Anti-spyware Applications

Not enough available RAM on Computer/Server

Not enough available CPU on Computer/Server

Disks on customer's Computer/Server are very busy

Internet Connection Upload speed is slower than download speed - most customers are not aware their ISP's Upload speed is slower than their download speed.  (This is not the case for all ISPs.)

Large Backup sets with over 100,000 files will take longer to process before the backup starts.

Firewalls.
